The Importance of Self-Advocacy in Healthcare

Self-advocacy allows patients to receive the most optimal treatment and attain the highest possible quality of life while coping with their disease or altered physiological state. Our team seeks to understand patients' experiences and develop interventions to improve their ability to stand up for their healthcare needs as well as quality of life.

Team Science

Our research team collaborates closely with scientists, clinicians, advocacy organizations, and patient advocates to address timely questions about how patients advocate  for their needs and priorities. We strive to include stakeholder input throughout all stages of our research process, leveraging community partners to ensure our work asks questions that are important to those most closely affected. As an interdisciplinary team, our team merges top scientists in the fields of oncology, nursing, palliative care, behavioral health, serious games, and self-management research.

Students and Mentoring

Our research is supported by passionate, dedicated undergraduate students from the School of Nursing’s Undergraduate Research Mentorship Program. We also mentor several PhD and post-doctoral students interested in oncology, women’s health, patient self-advocacy, and research methods. Our team of students are integral to our team’s work, and we strive to expose them to meaningful projects which they can co-lead.  Several of our students have co-authored publications, presented our work at research conferences, and led sub-studies of topics of interest to them.

Our Funding

Our research studies have been funded by the American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute, National Institute of Nursing Research, and other research institutions.
